International Courses and Workshops
These courses, supported and organized through HHMI's International Program, provide scientists from around the world with advanced training in their fields and an opportunity to network with others in the international scientific community. The number and types of courses vary from year to year.
Advanced Laboratory Training Course: Epigenetic Regulation and Plant Development
December 1–9, 2008
National Laboratory of Genomics for Biodiversity (Langebio), Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav, Campus Guanjuato) Irapuato, Mexico
Organizers:
- Jean-Philippe Vielle-Calzada, Langebio, Cinvestav Irapuato, Mexico
- Daniel Grimanelli, IRD, Montpellier, France
- Javier Palatnik, IBR Rosario, Argentina
This course will provide an intensive theoretical and practical overview of epigenetic regulation and its emerging importance for the understanding of plant development. It will emphasize recent results from model species, providing a contemporary update in current methods used to study the structure, function, and evolution of the plant epigenome. The following topics will be included: chromatin structure and its characterization, small regulatory RNAs and their function, methylation and histone dynamics, the role of telomeres and telomerases, paramutation, parent-of-origin effects and early seed development, and function and evolution of transposable elements.
International keynote speakers and local investigators with expertise in plant molecular genetics will give lectures and guide journal club discussions. Practical instruction will take place within the new teaching laboratory facilities of Langebio. All activities will be conducted in English.
The course is aimed at students at the Ph.D. and postdoctoral levels and at beginning investigators with an immediate need to apply the methods taught in the course to their own research. Up to 25 applicants will be selected to attend. Candidates from Latin American countries are particularly encouraged to apply. Accommodation and meals will be provided for all students. There is no registration fee. All candidates must be fluent in English and able to cover their own roundtrip travel expenses to Guanajuato International Airport in Mexico.

Workshop: Current Topics and Methods in Ca2+ Signaling
April 26–May 6, 2009
Estalagem das Minas Gerais (Ouro Preto) and Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG, Belo Horizonte) Minas Gerais, Brazil
Organizers:
- Maria de Fátima Leite, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil
- Barbara Ehrlich, Yale University School of Medicine, USA
- Mateus T. Guerra, Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil
This workshop will cover the latest advances in Ca2+ signaling on different model systems. The aim is to bring together internationally renowned investigators with PhD students, Post-docs and Junior Scientists for a theoretical and practical course in Ca2+ signaling research. The first part of the workshop will be held at the Estalagem das Minas Gerais in Ouro Preto and will feature presentations and discussions on diverse aspects of Ca2+ signaling, including the biophysics of Ca2+ channels and calcium-sensing receptors and the role of calcium signaling in neuronal physiology, cardiomyocyte function, epithelial cell function, lipid metabolism, mitochondrial signaling, apoptosis, embryonic development, and plant physiology. The second part of the workshop will include a practical course on current methods used for studying Ca2+ signals and will be conducted at facilities of the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Belo Horizonte.
To encourage an exchange of ideas and networking between participants, the practical course will be limited to 16 attendees. Candidates from Latin American countries are particularly encouraged to apply. Accommodation will be provided for all students. There is no registration fee. All candidates must be fluent in English and able to cover their own roundtrip travel expenses to Belo Horizonte International Airport.

Advanced Laboratory Training Course: Viral Subversion of Immune Response
June 7–18, 2009
Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka Rijeka, Croatia
Organizers:
- Astrid Krmpotic, Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka, Croatia
- Stipan Jonjic, Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka, Croatia
- Ofer Mandelboim, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel
The course will provide an intensive theoretical and practical overview of viral regulation of innate and acquired immune response. In addition to covering viruses that are relevant human pathogens, the workshop will also cover the recent results obtained in animal models of viral diseases. The following topics will be included: viral evasion of NK cells and host escape mechanisms, viral interference with cytokines and chemokines, viral interference with antibody-dependent antiviral response, viral subversion of antigen presentation to CD8+ T cells, the significance of herpes viral immunoevasins during chronic/latent infection, virus-induced immunosuppression with respect to the host susceptibility to other pathogens, the role of host and viral microRNAs in the regulation of immune response, and viral interference with dendritic cells and immunogenetics of mouse NK cell receptors with respect to resistance to herpes viruses.
In addition to keynote lectures that will be given by the leaders in the field, the practical workshop will take place in laboratories at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Rijeka. The course will be conducted in English.
The course is aimed at Ph.D. and postdoctoral level students. Up to 21 applicants will be selected to attend. The candidates from European countries are particularly encouraged to apply.
